Georgiana Darcy Regency Gown

This dress reminded me of Georgiana Darcy since it's so soft and light. It's made of a sturdy 100% cotton fabric and although it is machine sewn all the seams are flat felled by hand so there's not a machine stitch to be seen! The hem is done by hand as well.

Sleeve detail:

The long sleeves button on and off so it can be a short sleeve or long sleeve dress!

A Cabled Scarf

I had a customer request a matching scarf to go with a pair of my cabled fingerless gloves recently and so I quickly made up a pattern to match.

I really liked how it ended up turning out, I am going to write the pattern up for it and if I ever publish the cable fingerless gloves pattern I will include it!

I made them out of 100% virgin wool so they are really warm and cozy!

So much wintery knitting has put me in the mood for Spring. There may be some cheery shop updates coming soon!

The shop is now open and I have a new fingerless glove design! I wanted to design a fingerless glove with a cable and a longer thumb and here are the results:

I made the cuffs slightly longer than my usual fingerless gloves and the edge rolls softly over your fingers.

They are made of 100% virgin wool so they are warm and toasty!

Truro Hand Bag

Almost three years ago (and I can hardly believe it's been that long) while I was living in England for a few months, my flat mate and I stopped into a upholstery fabric shop in Truro and each bought a small remnant with the plans of making bags. But we never seemed to find the time in our busy lives so the fabric stayed tucked away under my bed until a couple months ago I found some grey fabric that I thought would look so cute as handles and the inspiration for an upholstery bag was rekindled.

As a result....I now have this...

And it's my absolute favorite thing I've made so far.
Every time I use it I think of England and all the people there I grew to know and love and the many adventures I had. Maybe that's another reason this bag is so special. And it holds lots of yarn and books too so it's very useful which I like things to be.

One of my best investments when traveling is to buy fabric or yarn or some such thing. As I sew or knit the pieces together I feel as though I get to relive those memories for just a moment and then carry them with me as I go about new adventures.

Restrung

Awhile back my aunt gave me some beads that had been a necklace that belonged to my grandmother. The other day I restrung it how I imagine it may have been before it broke.

The beads are actually really heavy and they have a fun sparkle to them.
The clasp, I added. It's not original but I thought it went well with the style of the necklace.
Now I just need to make a dress I can wear it with! I love wearing vintage jewelry that belonged to my grandmothers. Do any of you have a favorite piece of jewelry that's special to you?

Jane Bingley Jacket

I recently finished this Jane Bennet inspired jacket for a lovely customer. After it was done I renamed it the Jane Bingley jacket because the color reminded me of Bingley's coat. ;)
It's made of 100% linen and fully lined.

Covered buttons give the garment a soft look:

Hand top stitching adds a handmade quality.

Genevieve: I am a piano teacher by day, an insomniac by night and a nerd all of the time! I love traditions and family gatherings. I love Jesus more than anything or anyone in the whole world. I have six siblings and fall 3rd from the top and 5th from the bottom! I have 4 siblings-in-law, 2 nephews and 1 niece, 1 dog, 1 cat, 2 steers and numerous chickens. My ultimate dream is to get married and be a stay-at-home mom who teaches her kids to love God and to work hard and have more fun than anyone thought possible!

Romantic Upcycled Fashion Envelopes

PC: What are your favorite materials to work with and what are you most often found working on?

Genevieve: Lately I have been having a great time making jewelry! My mom's cousin showed me how to make a bracelet a few years back and I've been hooked ever since! Aside from beads and wire I LOVE working with all kinds of fabric. I am very excited about clothing from different era's (especially 19th century) as well as modern. I have also made quilts for my sweet nephews and nieces and will start a quilt for my sis's 16th birthday as soon as she picks out the fabric. I also love to draw paper dolls. My sister Ang and I started making paper dolls when we were around 8 or 9 and I haven't grown out of it yet. :)

PC: When did you start making things and who taught you?

Genevieve: My earliest crafty moment memories were with my Grandma who just passed away this year. She taught me how to cut out pictures from magazines and glue them into a scrap book. I still have that scrap book! Yes, I keep everything. My mom also helped bring out the creator in me by sewing clothes for us kids as well as cooking and canning. The best thing was that she always let us help! She has the patience of a saint! When I was nine I was in a 4-H club (long live 4-Her's!) for sewing and cooking. I made some amazing shorts with blindingly bright multi-colored cats all over them (I think my sister still wears them!) and won a blue ribbon! I had been sewing before that as well and made the obligatory bean bags, scrunchies (hello 90's!), doll sized pillows and some very garish Christmas ornaments. Then my older sister taught me how to make civil war era costumes and we've been sewing fiends ever since then!

Genevieve: Make what you like. Don't try a project unless you really love it. If you don't love it you wont finish it. Even if it looks too complicated...take a risk! You just might be great at it. And if you run into problems, find someone who knows how to do it and ask them to help you out. Or take a class! It is so much fun to learn different styles and techniques and meet new friends who love to do the same things as you.

Lady Gisborne Leather Necklace

Although I didn't get any gowns done for Maid Marian Fashion Weekend I did get this necklace made which is inspired by...well, the bad guy actually. But he was a big part of Marian's life, if you remember. :)
I was inspired by Guy of Gisborne's taste in fashion (lots of black leather) and what he might have picked out for the love of his life.

Guy seems to have a thing for leather...this lightweight leather cord is perfect to go with Marian's style. (Don't worry...Robin Hood is still first in her heart) And the blue stone and silver ringed charm add a bit of medieval elegance.

Online Quilt Festival

I'm a day late in getting this posted but I had all the lovely pictures my friend Genevieve took so I thought I'd just do it! Park City Girl is doing an online quilt festival so I thought I'd share this quilt I made for Gen.

I made this quilt following the Grandmother's Flower Garden pattern. The entire center of octagons is hand pieced. I mostly worked on it at Civil War reenactments and almost all the fabrics used are from leftover scraps from our reenacting clothes. Since the quilt was mostly hand sewn I didn't want to machine quilt it and didn't have the time to hand quilt, so I tied it with bamboo threads:

It's that time of year again! I've got my crochet hooks out and I'm busily making warm things for winter. Probably my favorite thing to crochet at the moment is fingerless gloves. I love adding cuffs and buttons and trying to make each pair unique.

Hello all my lovely readers/viewers. :)

I'm considering since this blog has been under great neglect, simply because I haven't been very quick about finishing up historic costumes lately, that I might start posting things I'm putting in my shop on here as well as any other happenings on Etsy or fun stuff I might think up along the way. I will still continue to post pictures of costumes as I finish them, but this way I can update more often and make this blog a bit more fun. What do you all think? :)

Maid Marian Shrug

I was so inspired by Maid Marian's wardobe in the BBC television drama of Robin Hood. I love the way they mixed Medieval and modern. It gave me inspiration to make some pieces to wear with modern wear today. This was my first experiment. I made the pattern up.

Isabella Embroidered Regency Gown

This dress was an intense undertaking as it is has so much detail and is entirely hand sewn.
I used the Sense and Sensibility Gathered Bodice pattern and modified it.

Sleeves are from Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion 1.
Buttons up with buttons I covered:

Front is decorated with embroidery:Tiny tucks on each side and black ribbon trims the waist:

The hem is trimmed with embroidery and ribbon. Hemmed with black fabric.

One things for sure...I'm so glad it's done! I've been working on this dress for months. Feels so good to have it done!

Celtic Embroidered Civil War Chemise

I've been inspired by Irish immigrants during the Civil War and thought it would be cool to incorporate a bit of a Celtic feel into my Civil War clothes. I started with the chemise by designing an embroidery pattern inspired by some Celtic designs.

The yoke front and back are embroidered with creamy embroidery thread:

I embroidered my first initial on the inside of the yoke back:

I used these shell buttons from Craftitis:
The chemise is entirely hand sewn, made from 100% cotton muslin.

I'm not sure if I'll do everything Celtic inspired...but I have fun playing around with different ideas! :)

Midnight Blue Embroidered Regency Spencer

My lovely friends gave me a couple patterns from Sense and Sensibility for my birthday and I couldn't wait to try them out! Here is my first try at a Regency Spencer:
I added tabs to the front and made buttons and embroidered them:

As well as added a touch of embroidery on the collar:

The fabric was so thick, I pleated it instead of gathering. I like the way it looks!

Elizabeth Swann Chemise

Here is my replica of Elizabeth Swann's chemise from Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. It is worn underneath her Gold Gown worn to Norrington's promotion ceremony.

I drafted my own pattern and everything is completely hand stitched. Hers is made of dotted swiss but I made mine from a white on white cotton print.

"Prepare to walk the plank..."

I think the sleeves are my favorite part. :)
And I love this lace: And of course the outfit wouldn't be complete with out the proper "effects". ;)

I just wanted you all to know I haven't abandoned this blog! Just been busy! I've finished my Elizabeth Swann chemise and will be posting pictures soon.

I may turn this into a finished anything gallery, not just costumes...since I seem to be making a lot of different things lately and not enough costumes to keep this blog updated. But we shall see. What do all of you think?

A Regency Gown

I just finished this Regency Gown for a customer last night.

I just love the fabric!

I used the Sense and Sensibility Regency Gown pattern available here.

She wanted it made in the same style as the "Emma Meets Frank Churchhill" gown. See here.

I added full gathering across the front:
Scrunched the sleeves up with gathering stitches:

And there you have it....a new Regency dress. :)

Susan Pevensie's Green Archery Dress

I fell in love with this dress Susan wears the first time I saw The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. I had a lot of fun making a replica of this dress!

Emma Meets Frank Churchill Dress

Hand Beaded Bag

Before starting one of my dream projects, the Dinner Gown from the film Titanic, I decided to practice beading. I turned my practice into a little bag, which I'm now selling in my shop.

The bag is made of black sheer with red lining. It's sewn completely by hand, with french seams for durability. Black and silver beads decorate it and it's drawn up by a soft black satin ribbon.

Jane Bennet House Coat Replica

I loved this jacket Jane wears in the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice so I just had to make it!

I used the Sense and Sensibility Regency Gown pattern as a base to draw up a pattern and then changed seamlines and cut and shaped until it came out right.

The jacket is sewn on the machine but all top stitching and hemming is done by hand.

I used Past Patterns fitted bodice pattern and the skirt is four panels wide. I trimmed the dress with black bias tape. Shell buttons fasten the wrist bands.

Civil War Work Dress

I made this Civil War dress from Past Patterns Fitted Bodice pattern. The skirt is four panels wide.
I trimmed the neck with some tiny lace and some black velvet ribbon.
I did four rows of gethers at the sleeves.
This dress was worn to a recent Civil War reenactment. It was rather comfortable! (I didn't wear a hoop while working)

Jane Bennet Ballgown Replica

I needed a new dress for a ball awhile back and so I decided to make a replica of Jane Bennet's worn to the Netherfield ball in the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice. (If you haven't guessed, I love the costumes in this film!)

I used my absolute favorite pattern, Jennie Chancey's Regency Gown Pattern. I modified it a bit to make it look more like Jane's gown.
Here is a close up of the back. I used some of my great grandmother's shell buttons for the back.

I added some fullness to the front and also took a tiny bit of fullness out of the sleeve.

The gown is made from muslin. After researching the Regency era I learned that muslin was the most popular fabric for gowns. How often you wore muslin gowns, however, showed how rich you were as they were hard to keep clean!

I sewed the gown completely by hand.

Regency Shift and Short Stay

I got rather inspired from the nightgown/shift Lizzie Bennet wears in the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice. There was the tiniest little trim about the neck and sleeves. I decided to make my shift somewhat like it.

I used Simplicity pattern 4052 which was designed by Jennie Chancey. You should check out her website...http://sensibility.com/mainpage.htm She has some wonderful patterns!
Here is a close up of the trim I chrocheted onto the neck and sleeve edges. I tried to make it as much like Lizzie's as possible. :)

The shift is sewn completely by hand. I used a cotton cord to draw up the neckline.

Regency Stay:

These were fun to make! I sewed them by hand as well. The instructions even show you how to make eyelets by hand. The eyelets were really easy! The stay doesn't look like it ought to on the dress form as the form wont allow the stays to change it's shape. :) I made them a little too big though so I'm going to give them to a friend.

Elizabeth Swann Pirate Costume Replica

Here is my replica of Elizabeth Swann's pirate costume from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. I made it in a rush so it's not perfectly accurate, nor as well made as I would like. But it was still fun to wear!

The vest and shirt:
I used Simplicity 4923 for the shirt and McCall's 2258 for the vest, with a few modifications. I sewed the shirt and vest by machine.

The coat, pants, and "effects":

I used Butterick 3072 for the coat and Simplicity 4923 for the pants. I ordered the buttons for the coat from Jas Townsend & Son Inc. They are both sewn by machine. All the trim on the coat is sewn on by hand. I made the hat out of felt, using McCall's 2258.

I added tabs to the back of the vest to make it more like Elizabeth's I laced it with leather cording.
